B is for Brains…

I thought I’d drop in to tell you all about a fantastic beauty blog that I have recently stumbled across.

http://beautyandthebullshit.blogspot.com/

Being a beauty addict and a lover of science are two things that don’t necessarily go together. The beauty industry being the biggest, baddest spin doctor at the party. It takes a strong mind to decipher the bullshit from the data and this peek inside goes a long way to teaching you how in a straight forward, humorous and derisive manner that tickles me in the right way. Way to go Rowena!

Palmer’s Gentle Daily Cleanser.

Palmer’s Gentle Daily Cleanser, RRP AU$9.99

I bought this because I was using the Daily Facial Lotion and was really impressed with it (review to come). I wasn’t sure what to expect as my experience with cheap supermarket/chemist brands hadn’t proven to be very successful and I was pleasantly surprised by Palmer’s yet again.

I tend to have pretty normal skin, a little oily in my t zone and a little dry on my cheeks. I occasionally have a pimple or two on my chin and I probably don’t exfoliate as much as I should.

This cleanser is a thick, creamy texture with a very light floral scent that is almost not there at all. When applied to a wet face with wet hands it becomes milky and every so slightly lathers. It feels very gentle and leaves my skin feeling clean but not tight.

I’m on to my second tube and I think they must have tweaked the formula a tad because my first tube, the product was ultra think, like a balm and very hard to get out of the tube, I noticed that a few other beauty bloggers said the same thing about it. I’m glad that I did because I really like this cleanser, more so now that the product isn’t as thick.

The packaging is fine, especially for the price & I am completely happy with this cleanser. Like I said, this is my second tube and I will continue to repurchase this one. It’s a lovely product for a lovely price!

Restaurant Review: Spanish Tapas, Glebe

We needed to find somewhere for a quick dinner before going to the The Black Swan on Saturday night after our first choice, Spice I Am, had a 40 minute wait and we couldn’t find a park in Haymarket. We decided to test our luck with one of the restaurants at the Broadway end of Glebe Point Road.

We decided on Spanish Tapas. The restaurant was packed and we figured that this was a good sign, we should know by now that this isn’t always the case.

Even though it was busy we were able to get a table. We were seated and informed the waitress that we were off to see a movie and she suggested that we stick to the tapas menu. We selected 3 tapas, marinated lamb skewers ($13.00), pipis in white wine sauce ($16.00), potatoes in spicy tomato sauce ($11.00) with a side order of chilli bread ($4.00).

The bread came out first and was a greasy, butter doused roll, halved, with a few bits of chilli scattered around. The edges were hard and dry and the middle was stodgy, the bread was very average white bread with no texture of flavour. While there was a small kick to it, it was very uninteresting. It isn’t hard to have fresh, good quality bread or to toast it freshly as ordered and this tasted like it had been reheated. I reserved my portion for the white wine sauce that I was expecting with the pipis dish but Monkey didn’t wait and finished his before the first dish arrived. This was actually charged at $8.00 – $4.00 per piece - outrageous.

The first dish to arrive was the lamb, 2 skewers of about 5 or so chunks of lamb, doused in oil. While the meat was flavoursome, it was also chewy and fatty and the portion size was not worth the $13.00 price tag.

This was followed by the pipis. They were swimming in sauce and appeared to be plump but ended up being swollen and when they popped in your mouth, it was filled with a very fishy liquid that was unpleasant and Monkey only had a couple of these and declaired that he couldn’t eat any more because of the “bursting guts” so he finished off my portion of lamb while I suffered through the pipis (being the seafood lover out of the two of us). The sauce was oily and bland and I ended up using the table salt which I rarely ever do in a restaurant. The waiter came over to clear some dishes while there was still a pipi left in the bowl and, without asking, started to clear the table, putting the lamb dish into the dish of white wine sauce before I could stop him.

The potatoes arrived last and while a decent sized serve, maybe equivalent to two or three medium potatoes, were certainly not worth the $11.00 price. They were starchy and on the bland side, they tasted like they had been fried, without any seasoning and then tossed with the sauce until coated and left under a heat lamp to go soggy. They was no crispness to them at all. The tomato sauce was ever so slightly spicy but had no other flavour or dimension to it. Monkey stated that there isn’t much you can do with potato and I reminded him of some of the great potato dishes I’ve made, even something as simple as Lyonaise potatoes has people coming back for seconds and thirds.

All in all for $56.00 this was a very disappointing meal which left us both remembering our Malaysian “Best Steak in Town” experience which was so bad it was funny. This restaurant is over priced, considering we only drank soft drinks and the food tastes as though it is cooked without passion, the dishes displaying no character or flair. We wont be returning.

I hate for my first restaurant review to be a negative one but I feel honesty is the best policy and this place didn’t even come close to good. Also, sorry about the lack of pics, I wasn’t even thinking about the blog when we went out, so neglectful!

New red lipstick…

I took back 6 empties to M.A.C last week to cash them in for a new lippy and chose “M.A.C red” to add to my growing collection of red lipsticks.

Lately I’ve been wearing Revlon Matte lipstick in “Really Red” as it had great staying power and doesn’t bleed so it’s great when you’re out and about or at work as you don’t have to worry about what your lips are doing.

“M.A.C red”, described on the M.A.C website as “Vivid bright bluish-red (Satin)” is brighter than the Revlon lippy and also brighter than M.A.C “Russian Red”. As its a satin, it has a slight shine to it, it’s not matte but it certainly isn’t glossy. I really like the satin finish lipsticks as the formula is thick so it stays moist without bleeding much.

I took this pic at work in the ladies’ with my iPhone so the lighting is terrible and so is the picture quality! I’ll try to take a better pic tonight.

I love DIY facials. The ritual of it, the products, the “me” time, it’s all a wonderful way to unwind.

Before you start, make sure you’re organised. Here is what I use.

You’ll need:

  • Make up remover. I use a plant based sorboline and a face washer.
  • Cleanser. I use Palmers Gentle Daily Cleanser.
  • Scrub. I’ll be using a sample of Ocean Salt from Lush.
  • A bowl and hand towel to steam you face. You can’t see it in the picture but I will also be using a Lush toner tablet (it is actually in the little dish). Try to get your hands on these, they’re the shiz.
  • A face mask. I’ll be using Lush’s Sacred Truth fresh face mask.
  • A mask fan brush. Completely optional but highly recommended.
  • Cellulose sponges. Also optional but these are cheap and fantastic for removing masks.
  • An eye cream. I use Palmer’s Line Smoothing Eye Cream.
  • A serum. I use Aesop’s Damascan Rose Facial Treatment Oil.
  • A moisturiser. I use Palmer’s Night Renewal Cream.

First step is to remove your make up. The most effective and gentle method for this is either a plant based sorbolene or vegetable oil such as sweet almond, apricot kernel or your own blend. Jojoba is also a great option, though, a little more expensive.

Once you’ve massaged it all over, having concentrated on lips and eyes, you then use a face cloth soaked in hot water and then wrung out to wipe your face clean. I have a stash of these and I use a fresh one daily to prevent pimples.

Follow this by cleansing. I stinker upon Palmer’s Face range early last year when looking for a daily moisturiser with an SPF. I was so impressed with the daily facial moisturiser that I slowly ended up using the whole range. I’m on to my second tube of this cleanser and I really enjoy using it. It’s a cream cleanser with a slight lather that doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or itchy but clean fresh and plump. Winner. Because we have done a pre-cleanse with the sorbolene, we only need one cleanse. You never want to over cleanse or use a cleanser that is too astringent for your skin type. You’ll end up with more problems than those you were trying to fix. In most cases, women who have very oily skin can curb the problem significantly by using a gentler cleanser. True story.

The next step is exfoliation. There are two kinds of exfoliators that you can use – mechanical, the scrubby ones or chemical, the ones that contain acids that loosen the bonds in your skin and allow the dead cells to slough off. I generally prefer a chemical exfoliant because they are gentler and work better but today I have a sample from Lush of their Ocean Salt exfoliant, one of the scrubby ones but this one also contains lemon juice which or citric acid so it’s the best of both I guess you could say. I also love this scrub for DIY manis but more on that another day!

Now that our face is clean and polished it’s time to steam so that we can get the most out of the ingredients in our mask. I stumbled across an amazingly lovely little product from Lush a few months back…Toner Tablets. These are like bath ballistics for your face and are vitamin enriched. Today I’ve use the “Q” tablet which contains vitamin Q10 which is fantastic for skin, especially mature skin. All you do is drop one in a bowl with a few cups of freshly boiled water, drape a towel over your head and relax while you breathe through your nose slowly and deeply. This is not only a face steam but also an inhalation, excellent for stuffed up sinuses and allergies. Steam for about 5 minutes then pat your face dry and put the bowl aside and reserve the water, we’ll be using this again later.

Now apply your mask. I’m using a Lush fresh mask called the Sacred Truth. This one is designed for mature skin so it’s a lovely, indulgent mask. Here’s what Lush says:

“We all get older and if we’re sensible about it we will appreciate the wisdom we acquire and not look back with regret. However, there’s no point in rushing the process is there? The Sacred Truth is for people facing the facts and accepting the beginnings of their wrinkles, whilst still wanting to make the best of themselves without resorting to extreme (and expensive) measures. Our refreshing, revitalising mask contains massive amounts of fresh food for the face to soften, moisturise and give your skin a boost. It is packed with fresh antioxidant wheatgrass, ginseng and green tea to protect against free radicals while softening rose absolute, moisturising coconut butter and evening primrose oil keep your skin flexible. We recommend that you use it regularly for long term, natural protection. ”

Unfortunately Lush discontinued my favorite fresh mask but this comes in second for me. It’s a great mask for plinking and freshening tired skin.

Now that we have our masks on it’s time to relax. Grab a book, put on a record or do as I do and run yourself a hot bath with something delicious (I’m using a Mrs Whippy bath bomb – strawberry milkshake scented), and soak that day away.

Once you are relaxed and you can feel the mask starting to dry its time to remove it. This is where we use out toner tablet infused water and our cellulose sponges. I love double duty products! By using your infused water you’ve also toned your skin at the same time so now it’s on to serum.

I’m using 3 drops of Aesop Damascan Rose Facial Treatment oil which I also find to be a great boost to tired and dull skin. When I use this I wake up with smooth, soft and plump skin. It’s rather indulgent.

Next is eye cream, a small amount the size of the plastic end of a pin is plenty for both eyes. This is also part of the Palmer’s face range. A very good, basic eye cream that absorbs well and is great under make up.

Finally we apply moisturiser to face and neck. Nothing much to say about this one, only item in the Palmer’s face range that I’m not overly keen on.

Time for bed!

Nikita B… Bad!

It looks like I’ve neglected you, my darlings! I have been quite on the busy side at work and am in the midst of writing up a DIY facial that is taking a bit longer than I thought it would. Never fear though, the weekend is upon us and I promise to fill in the gaps in the next two days. Onwards and upwards!

January Jones KILLED it at the 2011 Golden Globes. She absolutely took my breath away.

Now I thought she looked stunning last year…

This was perfect for her hair and complexion. The periwinkle blue dress and coral lips were the perfect pairing.

This year, however, she stole the show. A MA ZING!

Everything here is perfection. I adore the hair, the make up is a nod to vintage but with a sheer lip, not to much blush – just enough to glow, perfect skin, killer dress.

Perfection.
